After the war, James Longstreet (left) and S. D. Lee refought the battle in the pages of the Southern Historical Society Papers.  Many historians credited Lee's massed artillery with breaking up Fitz-John Porter's V Corps assault on the afternoon of 30 August.  General Longstreet disagreed.
